Characteristic traffic load effects from a mixture of loading events on short to medium span bridges

چکیده
In recent years, highway bridge load assessment has been recognised as an area through which savings can be made by avoiding unnecessary bridge refurbishment and replacement. Load effects in bridges result from single truck crossings or multiple-truck presence events which are, statistically, not identically distributed. Conventional approaches fit statistical distributions to mixtures of non-identically distributed load effects. Inaccuracies in the conventional approach are identified and an alternative approach is developed to find the characteristic load effects. Theoretical and field data are used to show the potential implications of conventional techniques and to demonstrate the application of the new approach. 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Statistical Analysis of Traffic Loads and Traffic Load Effects on Bridges
It is vital to ensure highway structures to cater for increasing demand in transport capacity. This involves the precise estimation of structural load-carrying capacity to withstand potential maximum load effects in residual lifetime. The scope of this research thus addresses estimation of traffic load effect. Many different methods have been used to model extreme traffic load effects on bridge...
متن کاملProbabilistic fatigue load spectra for riveted railway bridges
This paper presents a probabilistic load model for fatigue assessment of old metallic railway bridges. The traffic basis of the model consists of trains obtained from past records and present-day trains obtained from codes. The traffic is divided into four distinct time periods each associated with particular characteristics in rail traffic. Traffic evolution scenarios for the future, in terms ...
متن کاملVertical response of short and long span suspension bridges due to near and far fault earthquakeshttps://jeg.khu.ac.ir/files/site1/yekta_program/bb/tmpl_yekta/bb_end.gif
Many researches have been currently conducted on the effects of fault distance on structures revealing that their seismic response can differ according to their distance from the fault. Suspension bridges due to their long period and high flexibility can be more sensitive to this phenomenon, especially in vertical vibration. Since the engineers tend to use longer spans, the length factor should...
متن کاملDynamic Reliability Assessment of Long-span Suspension bridges under stochastic traffic flow
For most existing bridges, supporting continuous traffic loads is the basic function. However, in addition to this load, bridges are exposed to environmental (Frangopol and Soliman, 2015 [1]), as well as various other complex loads, that are mostly random in nature, such as earthquake, flow-included loadings, wind and so on. All these loading conditions need to be considered and must satisfy th...
متن کاملUse of Salvaged Utility Poles in Roadway Bridges: Time-Dependent Behavior of Composite Wood-Concrete Beams
This research study focused on the long-term and repeated load behavior of wood-concrete composite beams in which the wood layer is composed of recycled utility poles. Previous research studies have found this type of a beam to have high efficiency and to be a potentially viable replacement for short span bridges on low traffic roadways. Since both wood and concrete exhibit time-dependent behav...
